In twenty two years, I never laid a finger on a soul
I was never one to break a thing to find out how to make it whole
Of those twenty two years, I've spent six in love
With a red-haired girl, skin white as a dove

I couldn't find a job, and she had stayed in school
So we lived in my father's house and lived by my father's rules
In the dark of the night I felt her body close to mine
And prayed each day upon us the sun would shine


There ain't much difference between love and death, both cruel and endless

He came home early one day, heard a noise from his father's room
The sound of his brother's voice and his name uttered as a moan
Took his father's gun and put a bullet in the chamber
Shot his brother in the back and he died collapsed on me

Turned away from my girl, her red hair clinging to my brother's skin
Felt tears on my cheeks and a fire from within
Took my baby's car and set off for God knows where
All my sorrow and rage longing to be shared

The judge said my revenge was not a justifiable cause
I should be killed for my misdeed under unchangeable moral laws
I'm not saying I am sorry for my crime though that could just be my own flaw
But at least I'll die knowing what my life was for

Wrong a gentle soul and you mess with something pure
For the malady it catches there will never be a cure
This is truth and those who lie will understand nonetheless
